Review - Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

It's taken a billion years...and 3 more star wars movies...and a horrible film about Tom Cruise invading the world...Yes that last one was just as surprising for you as it was for me BUT amidst this chaos We have gotten another Indiana Jones Adventure!!!! Now I know what your thinking "its been too long" "harrison ford has gotten too old" "shia is a poof" but you know what the Indy flicks have always been hella fun and are an american landmark of adventure films so I proudly said "if spielberg and ford are back they have my confidence" . Let me just say this movie deserved it! It was soooo good! It had everything you would expect from Indy. Great action set pieces! The Intro at area 51 was great (and we get a nice peek at a memorable item from "Raiders") This movie had lots to love if your a die hard. It brought back Indy's first "Bond girl" Marion Ravenwood, and it has nice nods to his previous films (pictures of his dad and friend from the previous three)and even the tv series "Adventures of Young Indiana Jones".

I Enjoyed all the different elements. It took me a bit to get used to seeing indy in the uber slick and digital film that lucas used in the star wars prequels but the extreme usage of classic huge sets easily helped remind me of the originals. The acting and comedy was top notch. I havent been this interested in a harrison ford role since the last indiana jones film. You can tell he loves this character and feels at home. Marion and her banter with him was great, and the additon of Henry Jones Jr III aka Shia Lebouf was handled really well. The movie had its moments that are over the top and enjoyable i.e indy surviving a nuclear blast in a lead lined fridge and over the top and not so enjoyable i.e shia leaping across vines with a pack of monkeys. : p
BTW Cate Blanchett was great as a psychic-esque soviett Irina Spalko.
This film is already in my Blockbuster Online Queue and I cant wait to pop it in in amazing Blu Ray quality, but thats a whole other post. Can someone call disney and tell them to bring the Indy ride to MGM already? thanks.
*****
My Recommendation: Go see it and appreciate a classic character's return to the big screen

I enjoyed a lot of the beginning half of the film. I found that I could easily suspend belief for that nuclear explosion that was withstood from within a lead-lined refrigerator....

I cannot, however, suspend belief long enough to buy that aliens are the Mayan gods, bullshit.

Even still, I could have withstood that plot line had the fucking alien skeletons not morphed together to make one flesh and blood alien. Also, Ancient Mayan ruins turning into a space ship? You've gotta be fucking kidding me.

Also, NINJA FUCKING MEXICANS? Excuse me, but I've had plenty of experience with Mexicans, especially in these last two months...I just want to say that Martial arts, Ninja tactics, and stone facades that easily crumble to the touch for the convenience of a sneak attack is definitely something that does NOT fit into their culture.

The culture that embraces huge ugly hats made of hay, mariachis, and all kinds of diarrhea-inducing cuisine is hardly the culture to harbor or produce ninja warrior assassins.

Why couldn't the crystal fucking skull be a priceless relic that is worshiped by an ancient people because it is a representation of their god?

Better yet, they could have spun it in the plot that the Spanish conquistadors brought it with them in a effort to convince them to hand over their land and their people because they are messengers of God?

This plot could have been SO much better, it's ridiculous how awful George Lucas made it. Lucas and his fucking Aliens.

Admittedly, the beginning was awesome. I enjoyed everything up until they entered the cave in the waterfall with the stupid hidden Mayan attack ninjas.

The nod to raiders was awesome and well appreciated. Shia LaBeouf's entrance was appreciated (although I agree with critics when they said that he looked like a Marlon Brando rip off from "the wild one." Go look up pictures, they took his costume stitch for stitch.)

I especially liked the part where Shia is talking to Indy about the letter and they play on cultural prejudices of the time period by having the greasers fight with the jocks.

Still, this movie could have been amazing. If it weren't for the fucking Aliens.

I didnt mind the whole aliens thing...it fits in with modern lore that aliens mustve built all these different great cities and shared technology with ancient civilizations.

Spielberg and Lucas are not asking people to believe this as fact they merely play up on modern myths.

like i said i didnt mind it.

Thouroughly enjoyed it and would place it in front of the last crusade.

Well, I haven't watched the last crusade in a long time, but I do know that The last crusade and Raiders were both based on ancient religious relics that are coveted by many different kinds of people. Denominations of faith don't even matter because those relics are hunted by the entire world.

The Jews and the muslims have been fighting over the lands these relics are said to be located on for hundreds and hundreds of years.

My cousin Julie brought up the argument that possibly, Lucas is an atheist. Which could explain why it is that he looks so much to alien races and space lore. She explained that to him the aliens coming to teach the Mayans is every bit as plausible and legitimate as finding the ark of the covenant or the holy grail.

This is a valid supposition, but I still think that a lot of people will have a hard time accepting it. Most of the reviews I've read have been negative ones.

Like I said before, I thought that it was beautifully made with the exception of a couple of things.

I think that I'm so disappointed exactly because of that. It came so close to being spectacular for me.

I think that I could've loved it still. I think that the final nail in the coffin was the alien skeletons all combining and morphing into one living alien... I think that's where I was like WTF?

They are not asking anyone to believe it. This isnt fact merely a movie where an adventure hero has an adventure that plays up on modern myths. Its the same shit as any other movie that does it such as the mummy or the da vinci code.

If someone is atheist and extremist mind you and doesnt believe in god or the ark or the holy grail then given ur understanding the original films would all be "ridiculous and fake".

I dont believe Aliens built the pyramids or "El Dorado" but i do think lucas and spielburg were not crazy when they chose to have indy look for an ANCIENT city that is built by higher beings, fits with all the crap sci fi the 50's had and the modern myths and legends we hear about these places.

As u can see i loved this movie...but what do i know i loved the village. I thought it's ending was genius.
